Start with the honest answer
A Phoenix-area pool can lose noticeable water to evaporation, especially during hot, dry, windy weather. It can also lose water from a shell, fitting, plumbing, spa, equipment, or water-feature leak. The point is to measure before guessing.
How much water loss is normal?
In summer, Phoenix-area pools can commonly lose roughly 1/4 to 1/2 inch per day depending on weather, sun, wind, water temperature, pool shape, water features, and whether a cover is used. Spring and fall are often lower. Winter loss is usually substantially lower.
Use the bucket test
Fill a bucket with pool water, place it on a step, mark the water level inside the bucket and the pool level outside the bucket, then compare both marks after about 24 hours. If the pool drops more than the bucket, the difference is unexplained water loss and should be investigated.
Warning signs worth taking seriously
Wet soil, air in return lines, cracks that draw dye, a constantly running autofill, rising water use, and water loss that changes when the pump or spa runs all point toward a need for professional diagnosis.
Compare pump-on and pump-off behavior
Water loss that increases while the circulation system is running can point toward a return-side plumbing problem, while air entering the pump or returns can support a suction-side concern. A pool that loses water at the same rate with the equipment off may still have a shell, fitting, light, skimmer, or static plumbing leak. These patterns guide testing, but they do not prove a location by themselves.
Watch the level where the water stops
If the water repeatedly settles at the same height, inspect features at that elevation: skimmer throats, tile-line cracks, return fittings, lights, spa spillways, and water-feature penetrations. Do not allow the level to fall far enough to damage equipment or expose finishes that should remain submerged. Record the stopping point and take photos for the technician.

A pool can lose water through deteriorated fittings, skimmer separation, light niches and conduit, shell cracks, equipment connections, valves, autofill plumbing, or buried suction and return lines. Attached spas and water features add more valves, elevations, and penetrations, which is why isolating each part of the system matters before repair.
