The pattern does not prove the skimmer is leaking. Pump operation, valve position, an autofill, an overflow path, weather, and connected plumbing can change where the water appears to settle.
Protect the pump before watching the level
A low pool level can starve the skimmer and pull air into the circulation system. Pentair guidance for its U-3 skimmer calls for maintaining water 1 1/2 to 2 inches above the bottom of that skimmer opening, while other equipment may have different requirements. More unexplained loss while the pump runs can move return-side or pressure plumbing and operating water features higher on the testing list; air entering the pump can support a suction-side concern. More unexplained loss with equipment off can make a static leak, such as the shell, fittings, skimmer, light, or gravity-fed plumbing, more worth investigating. Clues that can make the skimmer more worth testing
A repeated stopping level at the skimmer is more useful when it appears with a visible gap or crack, dye movement found during controlled testing, recurring moisture near the skimmer, air entering the pump, or a failed isolation or pressure test on the skimmer line. None of those observations should be converted into a repair recommendation until the actual path is confirmed.
Why letting the pool continue to drain is a poor test
